The Order of the Crescent

at

The Sword of Honour Jousts, The Royal Armouries, Leeds, England, March 24-28, 2005.

When we were invited to partipate in the Sword of Honour team jousts at the Armouries, we searched diligently for a name for our team and decided to 'recreate' King Rene' of Anjou's order of chivalry, called the "Order of the Crescent" that he founded in 1448, but which died with him in 1490. We adopted some of the regalia of the original order, that being the silver crescent hung from a gold chain interlaced with a black ribbon, and shields bearing the silver crescent and all three of our arms. I produced the shields and Adam desForges (formerly of the Armouries) painted them at Toby's behest. The team included Tobias Capwell (experienced jouster and current Curator of Arms & Armour of the Glasgow Museums), Steve Mallett (horse trainer, stunt person & horse master of Destrier) and myself. The tournament consisted of one day of skill at arms in soft kit, then four days of jousting with two sessions per day. On overall points we placed second, with the Burgundian team of Joram van Essen, Arne Koets and Fred Pirau taking the Sword of Honour.

Here are a few pictures of us. Most of the documentation of the event is video, as my wife Gwen couldn't shoot video and photos at the same time, and the video is a better record of the goings-on. Hopefully I'll get some screen shots from the video and put them up on this page soon.

Enjoy these and feel free to email me if you have questions or comments.
